Some stress is good, some stress is bad. Some people say that stress is a killer. Well, it’s not quite correct. It’s not stress that kills us, but rather our inability to adapt to it.
The adrenal glands are chain of endocrine glands that secrete two hormones, adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones, also known as epinephrine and norepinephrine, are produced in the cortex of your adrenal glands. Your adrenal glands also secrete a fluid that aids in the digestion and absorption of nutrients in the gut and other parts of the body.
What Does Adrenal Fatigue Do To You?
Let’s use a real-life scenario to explain how these hormones impact your life. There was a young woman living in Chicago who was trying to stretch her budget as she balanced her budget. To do so, she chose to walk in the direction of a homeless man who was about to acceptance a ride to the South Chicago to seek solace from a religious leader. After climbing some stairs she noticed a rat run across the street behind a grocery store. Impulsively, she chased after the rat with her bare foot. Realizing that she caught the rat, she turned her attention to the homeless man. After offering him a ride to the South Chicago church, she left him at the bus stop.
What happens when you catch a cold or flu or any type of illness? It sets off a alarm in your body that your immune system is compromised and you could contract an infection. Your immune system is responsible for identifying viruses and other pathogens that should be eliminated so your body can resume its own healing process. When you catch a cold or flu, it sets off alarm bells in your immune system that needs more time to identify the authentic threat. Your immune system status changes and your are now less equipped to fight off illness.
The next day, the woman who had missed the sign of the rat through lack of vitamin A went to the doctor for a follow-up. It was discovered that she was suffering from adrenal fatigue. She was given more vitamin A and within a few days, her cold symptoms were back. What’s more, she mentioned that she had previously taken some antibiotics as part of her flu treatment and found out that the antibiotics were ineffective. In essence, her health was compromised due to stress.
Stress has been known to cause and aggravate infections. When you catch colds or flu after a stressful event, it could mean that you have gotten sick because your immune system is not functioning up to par. It’s very easy to do this by being stressed, working long hours, lack of sleep and lack of exercise. It does not take a genius to realize that your health will be compromised if you do not strengthen your immune system for flus and colds.
